Human Impact on Platypuses
Humans impact platypuses by causing dam construction, chemical pollution, garbage, oil spills, global warming, and pollution in waterways. One way humans cause those things are by moving into areas near the platypus habitat and by dumping garbage and waste into rivers, lakes, streams and other bodies of water. Humans impact global warming by polluting the air. Humans cause oil spills from boats that sometimes leak oil. One way humans can fix these problems is by picking up trash and not dumping garbage into bodies of water. Another way is by not moving near platypus habitat. Fish, aquatic mammals and other water animals are affected by water pollution. Most animals are affected by chemical pollution.
Platypuses were hunted for their fur in the 1800s and early 1900s. Today there are laws against hunting platypuses.
An adaptation that would help a platypus survive water pollution would be for the platypus to be able to hunt on land so it wouldn't have to go into the water to find food.
If platypuses had sharp teeth to catch food on land, they would be able to survive water pollution better.
